Cruise @ 80...

You're looking at a modified DRZ or something orange or blue/yellow...or possibly even Italian.

Aprilia, Husaberg, Husq, KTM...

I don't think a WR250 will haul you @ 80 any better than a modded DRZ.

As for the DRZ - jetting, pipe, airbox...the standard power set should get you to 80 and get you there fairly quickly...ask Yardy he's got all those toys on his.

all of these are race bikes, meaning they have the maintenance schedule of a race bike. if you only want to race it, go for it.

if you want a 650 class sumo, there's the bmw with the bomb proof rotax motor, or the ktm 690

either one will put in you hole a lot of money.

a 250 with a big bore kit should haul you at 75 just fine. holding 80 would suck cuz it's so damn light.

250 has the better suspension parts, plus has fuel injection, also doesn't has an electrical system that can power heated gear. ( as i understand, the drz doesn't put out enough).

I wear heated gearz just fine cockmonger.

However your bike probably doesn't kill the battery if it's not started for a month and a half.

80 on a drz is never going to be smooth but you get used to it.

i'm not sure how heated gear got into the conversation but i've used my gerbing liner a few times without issue. but my commute is about 15 minutes and i can count on one hand how many times i've done it. if its cold i usually just laywer up.

if you want something you can cruise on the freeways i'd look at the KTM 690. its fairly agile and more than capable on and off pavement. i've no clue how much they run or what maintenance will cost ya but with the exception of doing single track stuffs it sounds to me like what you're lookin for.

if you get into real off road type riding you'll want to switch to a DS or an actual off road bike anyway.

Worries about 400> cc is im 6'2" 220 and im afraid the lil 250s will die under my fat ass

KTM i cant justify spendin 10grand on an SM when i can spend that on a duc or trumpet

250s just seem to me to scream OMG its fatass
while the 400cc and above are like Hey fatass lets rock
saw the 990 KTMS and a supermoto with 115hp is like putting nitrous in a mini big fun and bigger trouble

there are plenty of fatasses on the 250's. the yamahopper is still going to be the most powerful of the street legal 250 group. best fix for mid range is a big bore kit. roughly $600

i'm sure you assholes were waiting for this... but a klr.... you can put a 16t sprocket, 685 kit, and 18" wheels on it and be under $5k if you started off with a used one.

shouldn't be too much different. but no one that racks up miles seems to have one. normal maint though is oil change every 3k or earlier depending on abuse, valves at 26k.

2 big bore kits out there.

athena -> new aluminum jug (like factory)
thumper racing -> you send them your jug, they bore it and sleeve it.

TR seems to think the athena kit is made sub par, but everyone keeps posting measurements that prove him wrong, so i'm not sure.

there's a factory gytr/athena kit for the 250 that includes pipe/programmer/BB

buuut the programmer sucks from what i read, and TR posted better results with an FMF pipe.

Can't speak for new KTM's but my 625 is like a Harley with viberation but more fun that I can speak about in a WS section

I did ride Scott's DRZ and that thing was smoooothhh compared to mine but I felt like there was 0 power unlike my KTM. I should also mention my KTM is far from stock and is pushing 690 hp #'s.

Have you thought about duel sport like a KLR, not a motard but fun could be had.

some people who (re)build drz motors are strongly suggesting 1000mile oil changes without a big bore kit. Based on that info, personally I'm not sure I would be doing 3000 mile oil changes on a big bored wr or drz.

Honestly, it sounds like your requirements are met by the ktm 690. That said, you learn to accept the limitations of the drz. fwiw I cruise @ 76mph indicated the 20mile each way trip to work, with occassional wind ups to 95ish when necessary (just takes a little time). This is with stock gearing and an 80 height rear tire.

1000 mile oil changes on the drz?

also if you don't loctite engine parts they come undone and grenade the engine?

are there any japanese 250/400 dual sports with true street bike maintanance/reliability?

is an unmodded yamaha actually like that?

what about the 650's?

anything that I can actually run like a vehicle instead of maintain it all the fucking time?

i would say yes to the yamaha being fairly close to street bike maint/reliability.

650's
well...the bmw 650's are pretty close as well. i never had to do any constant maint to my f650gs when i had it. although i think their major service intervals are at 12k miles? but it has a rotax motor, so that will pretty much never go out of spec. when i had that done on mine, all they did was grease some stuff, change my spark plug, fuel filter and air filter. i kinda want one again because it was a put gas in it and ride kind of bike.

i can't comment on klr's but it sure seems like people that own them are always working on them...

i say you should get a used f650gs. you can find them for 5k or less. just make sure you get the one with the 4 bolt windscreen. the 3 bolt ones had fork issues. poor casting, and the bottoms sheer off.

edit on price. that's for a bone stock one.
