Every week https://www.coltsfanshop.com/Denzelle-Good-Jersey , I will present a summary of some basic and advanced stats for the Colts performance relative to the league. Thanks to Pro Football Reference, NFL.com and the nflSCrapR project for being awesome sources of weekly data. The relationship between an NFL offense and the defense it faces is complementary and interconnected. It is a yin and yang where each is dependent upon and defines the other. So, it is difficult to say if last Sunday was an outstanding Indy defense or a horrible Jacksonville offense. The answer may just be the sound of one hand clapping. And for those who want me to stop conflating disparate eastern philosophies, I can safely say that was Zen and this is Tao. Alternatively, we can just look at the stats and see that the defense put up some remarkable numbers.Jacksonville was allowed into Indy territory only twice all day and they earned just 11 first downs. Throw in 3 sacks and a takeaway and you get a 50% Drive Success Rate, which is actually worse than what the Jags defense did to the Colts. TEAM TOTALSOf the 384 games so far this year, a 50% DSR ranks 8th lowest and easily puts the Indy D as the best defensive effort of the week. They also finished at the top of the pile in First Down % against. The Colts held the Jags to just 0.5 adjusted points per drive, which is the second best effort for the week, eclipsed only by. . . oh right, Jacksonville blanking Indy. PASSINGGiving up a 4.9 ANY/A is actually pretty good pass defense but a lot of teams managed that this week so the ranking is just “meh”. But with 3 sacks, no TDs and just 1 explosive pass play Clayton Geathers Jersey , Cody Kessler could not move the ball through the air as only 26% of his passes earned a new set of downs (6th lowest). While Kessler did attain a high 75% completion rate, that is mostly explained by how short his passes were.1.9 avg air yards per completion was the shortest in the league this week. The last time around the Jags hung 9.9 Yards After the Catch on the Colts, but this week, it was limited to 6.4. That is still a big number but somewhat forgivable as really short passes tend to have inflated YAC. RUSHINGWith 2.9 Yards per Carry and a 18% weighted Rush Success Rate, the Colts completely shut down the Jags run game.It was the 3rd best effort of the week with the top spot going to . . . oh right, Jacksonville . . . crap. CONCLUSIONS & NEXT MATCH-UPI know a lot of people will be hesitant to give the Colts D any credit as Jacksonville’s offensewas severely hobbled. But in those situations, a good defense should keep their opponents out of the end zone and quickly get the ball back to their offense and that’s exactly what the Colts did. This coming Sunday, the defense will be tested by Deshaun Watson, best known as Joe the policeman on the “What’s Goin’ Down” episode of “That’s My Momma”.Houston has been putting up basically league average numbers over the last 4 games, but they have walked away with W’s in all of them. On the year, their pass game ranks 9th in ANY/A and the run game is 25th in wRSR.So Nate Hairston Color Rush Jersey , on paper that looks to be a rough day for the Colts through the air but they should be better able to stop the run. They added Derrick Kindred which may not be the splashiest addition of the off-season, but is a solid ad overall. The Colts claimed the former Browns’ draft pick today and inherited what is left of his original rookie deal with the team. He was recently released by the team after they traded for safety Eric Murray from the Chiefs. In today’s film room we will look what he brings to this Colts team. He struggled a bit in 2018 compared to previous seasons so we will also cover the areas that give me drawbacks in regards to this waiver claim.BackgroundCollege:TCUSize:5’10” 210 poundsMeasureables:40 Time: 4.50 / Bench Reps: 17 / Vertical Jump: 37.5 inches / Broad Jump: 123 inches / 3-cone: 7.05 secondsCareer Stats (NFL):108 total tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, 12 pass deflections, and 2 interceptions.StrengthsVersatilityThere weren’t too many strengths that popped out to me on Kindred’s film. He really struggled in 2018 overall but I do believe that the Colts’ valued him mostly for his versatility. He lined up all over the place for the Browns for this past season. In the six games I watched, I saw him line up at outside cornerback, slot cornerback, deep safety, box safety, linebacker https://www.coltsfanshop.com/Braden-Smith-Jersey , and he played a ton of special teams as well. This versatility is certainly something the Colts value. This first clip showcases him lined up as a deep safety. Overall this is likely his weakest area as he struggles with his instincts and feel on the backend (which we will discuss later). He does a good job of coming downhill though and can make plays in the run game or in the short passing game from this area of the field as he does on this play. This next play has him lined up in the box as the box safety/linebacker role. This role is likely his best one as his instincts and speed limitations are hidden. He is a physical player and does a good job of being patient and hitting tight ends off the line. He needs to be stronger in run defense in terms of setting an edge and disengaging from blockers but overall he is decent in this role. This last clip shows him on special teams. He is solid in this area. On kick teams he is a good tackler who stays home on the outside and doesn’t allow big plays. On punt team, he displays great effort all around and makes key blocks or tackles when needed. Here he is coming down the right side and is able to track down the returner for the tackle. Effort/EnergyHow does a player make up for not being the most talented or instinctual player on the field? By giving effort on every single play. He is always involved in the action. For a team like the Colts who preach a swarm mentality on defense, his mindset should fit in nicely. If he were to ever see defensive snaps, the way he hustles on every play would be right in line with the rest of the defense. This first clip has Kindred starting off as an edge rusher of all positions. He drops into zone coverage near the sideline as the ball is snapped. Once he sees Deshaun Watson start rolling out of the pocket, he starts to come downhill out of his zone. He doesn’t stop in his pursuit until he comes away with the tackle just a couple yards down the field. This is good pursuit by Kindred and a solid tackle in open space. This next clip he travels quite a bit. He drops again into zone coverage out of his spot near the line of scrimmage at the snap.
