Then Smith scored his 15th goal this season and first in a month

VANCOUVER Petr Mrazek Jersey Womens , British Columbia (AP) — Elias Pettersson had one thought when he hit the ice before his first NHL game — stay upright. The 19-year-old Vancouver Canucks‘ center said he knew about the league’s tradition of initiating rookies with a solo skate during warm-ups, but hoped his teammates might make an exception.“Maybe I thought they would forget it because it was lonely, not that fun,” he said. “My only focus was not to fall.”Not only did Pettersson stay on his feet, he scored his first NHL goal on his first shot and also had an assist in the Canucks’ 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night.Nikolay Goldobin, Brendan Leipsic, Jake Virtanen and Tyler Motte also scored for Vancouver. Jacob Markstrom stopped 33 shots.Pettersson opened the scoring with 6:12 left in the first period, picking up the puck in the neutral zone, springing into the Calgary end with teammate Derrick Pouliot on a 2-on-1. Petterson kept the puck and fired a wrist shot into the top of the net.The goal brought chants of “Petter-sson” from the crowd.“Everyone on the team congratulated me, including the coaches. And then I didn’t expect a standing ovation from the crowd. So that was amazing,” said Pettersson, whose parents were among those in attendance.Teammate Eric Gudbranson said Pettersson, who led the Swedish hockey league in scoring last season with 56 poi8nts in 44 games, was ‘an absolute stud’ in his NHL debut.“One of the most impressive things about him is how responsible he is and how competitive he is,” Gudbranson said. “If he turns the puck over Jordan Schroeder Jersey Womens , he’s right back on it and he takes it away from you. He doesn’t give up anything. He plays the game incredibly well.”Matthew Tkachuk and Sean Monahan had goals for the Flames, and Mike Smith finished with 18 saves.Even Smith had kind words for Pettersson.“He made a great shot, he put right in the top corner. I got a piece of it with the glove, but yeah I have heard quite a bit about this young kid and he let her go and hit the perfect spot there,” Smith said.Pettersson then got an assist on Goldobin’s goal in the third period. Pettersson got the puck in front of the net and passed it off to his teammate, who tipped it in at the side to make it 2-0 at 1:52.Nearly 30 seconds later, Leipsic sneaked a puck into the same spot to put the Canucks up 3-0.Tkachuk then caught Markstrom too far out of the net and buried the puck to put the Flames on the scoreboard at 3:08. Defenseman Noah Hanifin got a secondary assist on the play for his first point with Calgary after being acquired from Carolina during the summer.Virtanen responded by getting a breakaway and sliding the puck in past Smith as he fell to the ice to make it 4-1 at 5:46.Monahan pulled the Flames within two again as he ended a battle outside the Vancouver crease with a wrist shot that slipped through Markstrom’s legs and into the net at 8:08.“Not enough pace, and not enough execution on it and not enough desperation,” Flames coach Bill Peters said. “At one point, I think through 40 (minutes) we were 1 for 7 on faceoffs on the power play, so it’s an important part of the game.”Vancouver’s Motte got a pass from Markus Granlund and put a long shot into the empty net with 47 seconds to go to cap the scoring.NOTES: Vancouver held Calgary scoreless on seven power plays. … Gudbranson spent nine minutes in the box, including a five-minute penalty he earned after dropping the gloves with Calgary’s Travis Hamonic midway through the first period. … Hamonic, who also received a five-minute major for his fight with Gudbranson, left the game but later returned wearing a full-face maskUP NEXTCalgary: Host Vancouver in the Flames’ home opener on Saturday.Canucks: At Calgary on Saturday night to open a six-game trip. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Nashville Predators took care of several issues Tuesday night at the expense of the Arizona Coyotes.None meant more than ending their power-play woes Matt Calvert Jersey Womens , if only for one night.Filip Forsberg ended an 0-for-34 power-play drought as part of Nashville’s three-goal second period, and the Predators beat the Coyotes 5-2 Tuesday night to snap a three-game skid at home.“We’ve been having a lot of good looks lately, but at the end of the day, it’s about scoring goals and we were fortunate to do that tonight,” Forsberg said. “I think we played well enough to have a couple more on the power play as well, but we will take one for tonight.”Roman Josi scored an empty-net goal with 2:50 left and had two assists, Ryan Ellis had a goal and an assist and Craig Smith and Calle Jarnkrok each had goals.Pekka Rinne made 24 saves as Nashville avoided being swept by Arizona this season, though the Coyotes did take the series 2-1.The Predators hadn’t scored on the man advantage since Jan. 9 in a win at Chicago and not at home since a loss to the Rangers on Dec. 29. They went 1 for 5 against Arizona.“We had a lot of looks and a lot of opportunities,” Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. “I thought that there could have been more than one . a couple of miscues on the shot, a couple of big saves, a couple couldn’t find their way in. Fil made a terrific shot coming in on his.”Vinnie Hinostroza and Derek Stepan scored for Arizona, which finished a six-game swing with a fourth straight loss. The Coyotes played their second game in as many nights without eight regulars due to injuries, and Calvin Pickard started in his 100th career NHL game with goalie Darcy Kuemper day-to-day with an upper body injury and made 42 saves.(He) was by far our best player tonight and kept us in and gave us a chance,” Stepan said. “That’s all you ask from your goaltender. Unfortunately, we just didn’t have the extra magic that we needed.”These teams hadn’t met since the end of November Cale Makar Jersey Womens , and Nashville managed only a goal in the two losses to Arizona. The Coyotes’ luck appeared to continue as Pickard made a stop on Forsberg late in the first period with the puck bouncing off his head and over the net, then the Coyotes went the other way with Hinostroza beating Rinne with a wrister from the slot at 16:59.Arizona had a 5-on-3 for 41 seconds in the first minute of the second period after Nashville captain Roman Josi cleared the puck over the glass, hitting a child behind the penalty box. The child walked out on his own with his family a few minutes later, and Nashville killed the penalties. Then Smith scored his 15th goal this season and first in a month on a wrister off a rebound at 2:58, tying it up for Nashville.“The 5-on-3 has actually killed us the last couple of games,” Arizona coach Rick Tocchet said. The Predators, who came in with a lengthy scoring drought with the man advantage, failed to convert on their first two power plays to extend the skid to 0 of 34. Hinostroza went to the box for holding Predators forward Kevin Fiala, and Nashville finally converted. Josi found Forsberg, whose wrister from the top of the right circle beat Pickard’s glove at 7:45 for a 2-1 lead against what had been the NHL’s stingiest on the penalty kill. Then Ellis made it 3-1 at 13:37 of the period off a rebound as Nashville outshot the Coyotes 19-6 in the second.NOTES: Nashville improved to 9-16-3 when allowing the first goal this season and 6-12-2 when trailing after one. The Predators are 26-2-0 when leading after two periods … Arizona had only allowed 22 power-play goals this season, fewest in the NHL.UP NEXTCoyotes: Host Columbus on Thursday night.Predators: Host Dallas on Thursday night.
