they're the best option you can get without springing for a fully programmable eeprom setup, which can run as high as a couple thousand dollars, depending on your make of bike.

the PCIII is a "piggyback" unit. it alters the signals sent from the ecu to the injectors. basically allows you to customize the fueling at multiple points across the rpm range to smooth out any dips in power, and combined with power adders, allows you to maximize the performance gained from those addons by providing the proper amount of fuel.

even on a stock bike, they're great for smoothing out the power delivery and providing you with quality power.

granted, they do require tuning on a dynamometer to maximize any gains... you can upload base maps into it, but that doesnt account for how individual bikes can and will run differently just by slight differences in manufacturing tolerances.

as for buying one, your best bet is to buy it where you can get it for the cheapest. they should come with a harness that matches up to your bike, and combined with a base map upload, should be "plug and play" for even the least technically inclined.

but if you're unsure, or have little familiarity with 3d fuel mapping and the associated software and/or familiarity with bike wiring, assembly/disassembly, let me know and i can help you out.

Do you think I can get a custom map for my set-up and not have to dyno? I am sure I can install it fine, and even upload maps to it. It really isn't adjustable other than loading different maps is it?

I think I am going to buy one and install it.

here is the thing to do get the power C thing then go and get the http://www.veypor.com/ digital gauge becuase it has a built in dyno record which you look up on a laptop. Combine though two items and then your set. Also you can get kits to make your own programable computer box for your bike but its a lot of work with the solding gun.

Do most dealers carry the power commander? Or will I have to order this?

kick ass hope it works out for you. Its a nice trick item that only adds the resale of the bike later on. That is if you sell it.

lol I already found that, but thanks. None of those maps match my bike although I may give some of them a shot anyway.

it's fully programmable. the maps can be tuned with the included software. of course tuning the fuel map requires a wideband O2/lambda sensor so you can visualize your air/fuel ratio to see where adjustments need to be made. the problem with doing a "home brewed tune" is the fact that you cant go WOT in first or you'll loop the bike... but if you go WOT in 3rd gear, you'll break the speed limit by a wide margin.

WOT in a single gear is the only way to get a proper a/f ratio reading, and is why a dyno is highly recommended.

I know that all bikes are different and different altitudes make a difference, but what if I use a close custom map from somebody with close to the same specs. I would imagine it would be close.

But assuming that I did dyno it and it was off then I would have to change a map then redyno it and so on and so on. I would have to purchase a dyno to really get a true reading or take up a whole mechanics day right?

should only take you an hour or two at the most.

If you explore enough, you'll find people who will share their maps with you. Experimenting with the custom maps can get you started, then simply adjust your fuel/air ratios for this elevation or whatever elevation you're at that day.

Is the fuel/air mixture adjustable, or are you saying adjust it in a map?

This will only work on a windows machine. This sucks for mac owners. Since I had to borrow a windows box to upload my map that will suck if I want to change it on the fly. Maybe it is time to buy a new mac and dual boot so I can upload my maps on the fly. I wish I could up load a map with my ipod lol.

Just thought everybody should know it is proprietery.

you should just go to boeing surpluse and buy a cheap laptop or base computer and just keep it in the shop for messing out with computer maps.

Pretty easy installing the PC III, I found one on ebay for $200.00-was on a 04R1 the guy crashed at the track.
Took about a 1/2 hour to install, remove the rear seat or cowl-the seat and lift the fuel tank so you have access under it.
Unplug the connector and plug in the PC, lay the rest of the wire and the unit itself where it's going to be mounted.
Don't forget the ground wire, i went to the neg. battery post.

Install the PC software to your computer ( i used my home unit) read thru the list of maps and find the one that matches or is as close as you can find for your bike.
If you are not sure there is a stock map for your bike you can start with and try changes from there.
I picked the one set up for stock or aftermarket air filter (I run a BMC race filter) V.stacks (graves on mine) and graves slip-ons (as close as i could find since i removed the Cat from my bike but still have the stock cans on it).
If i recall it's m44-012 from the list provided for the 2004 R1 on the PC web page.
I ended up remounting the pc unit under the rear seat back another 3 inches for a better fit but that was it.
Works much better than the stock map imho..
Still plan on a custom map in the future with the dyno work but i will say so far the bike runs great.
Feels like quicker revs and more power from 2k-13k.

Last but not least, if you have the remote power cable w/9 volt battery and USB calbe you can just pre load the map you want from your home PC and then install the unit on your bike.
If you have a laptop you can make changes any time you want.

Any questions--let me know.
Good luck.
