Rear drive went out on my Bimmer

My bike started making heavy clunking noises when getting on the freeway Wednesday. BMW came out and picked it up and they sent me an email earlier today saying the rear drive went out. I have the question pending with the bimmer techs but I want to know how one of the most robust bikes in the world has the rear drive go out on it with only 6k on it? I'm not even sure what the rear drive entails but i'm guessing where the rear wheel meshes with the drive shaft.
GRRR!!!

I hate driving the cage. I'm all lost, I couldnt figure out how to set the wipers on intermittent or turn them

off and it took me almost 2 hours to get home yesterday. It was nice having coffee on the way into work though but I would gladly trade that small comfort for a car pool lane.

Yes coffee into work. That is one of the many reasons I don't regularly ride into work.

you should trade it in on a real bike.

but in all seriousness, shaft drive systems arent designed for high horsepower applications. but i dont know why yours would have gone out.

Sounds like a fluke, those bikes have a good reliability rating to date. So long as they are fixing it under warranty I wouldn't think twice about it.

Damn that was fast, my bike was done yesterday. that was about 4 days in the shop. Got my 6k service too.

ready for another 6k.

yeah the mechanic did hint that they were having problems with the rear drives on these bikes and they were just replacing them as they see them. I asked if they had re-engineered it and he said it was the same. Oh well, other than that the bike is by far the best i've ever ridden.

i'm so glad to have it back and not have to drive the cage anymore. i've got to get a camel pack for coffee though.

Service? What is this service which you talk of? I just ride mine until I don't want it anymore or it starts giving me problems. Then I take it out and.....

speaking of which Inspector... what did you ever do with your disposable bike? what is wrong with it and is the frame striaght? is the motor ok?
that just might make a good track bike.
